Dr Paul Heithersay, Chief Executive, Department for Energy and Mining, SA Government
Dr Paul Heithersay leads the South Australian Department for Energy and Mining, the state's economic development agency responsible for investment attraction, management and regulation of South Australia's energy and mineral sectors.
The Department brings together a wealth of professional expertise across the resources, energy and renewables sectors to responsibly manage and regulate the state's vast wealth of mineral, gas, petroleum and energy resources on behalf of all the people of South Australia. Dr Heithersay’s focus is to deliver affordable, reliable and secure energy supplies in a transitioning national energy market while responsibly unlocking the value and opportunities of our mineral and energy resources.
As Chief Executive, Dr Heithersay’s role also incorporates leading efforts to secure investment in state-significant projects involving mineral resources and downstream processing. Port Pirie’s Smelter Transformation and the Steel Task Force for Whyalla are recent examples of some major investments supported by DEM that have benefitted the state.
Prior to his current leadership role, Dr Heithersay was deputy chief executive of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet where he was responsible for overseeing the management of the state’s minerals, resources, energy and economic development priorities.
He first joined the South Australian public service in 2002 as executive director of the Geological Survey of South Australia at the Department of Primary Industries and Resources SA. In 2012 Dr Heithersay received a Public Service Medal for his outstanding work supporting the growth and development of the mineral resources sector in South Australia, and later that year was elected to the Fellowship of the Fellows of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences.
In 2013 Dr Heithersay was awarded the prestigious Legend in Mining award for his role in guiding South Australia’s transformation into a major destination for investment in mineral resources and energy. In 2014 the Society of Economic Geologists appointed Dr Heithersay as the 2014 International Exchange Lecturer. The Society facilitates leading economic geologists to lecture at venues worldwide to engage with students and economic geology professionals, and in this role Dr Heithersay will continue to act as an ambassador for the profession and Society of Economic Geologists.
