Glencore is a leading producer and marketer of nickel, with assets in Australia, Canada and Europe. They produce some of the world’s purest nickel and are also one of the largest recyclers and processors of nickel-bearing materials, including batteries.
In Australia, Glencore (Minara Resources) wholly own the Murrin Murrin nickel and cobalt operations located about 880km east of Perth in the north-eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. The operation uses conventional open-pit mining methods to extract nickel and cobalt ore, before processing and refining of the laterite ore is undertaken at their complex hydrometallurgical facility.
Wayne is an experienced industry leader in the nickel market and has driven performance across Glencore’s nickel operations in Australia and New Caledonia.

Wayne Ashworth was appointed Head of Nickel Assets for Glencore in January 2020. Glencore is a leading producer and marketer of nickel globally and Wayne has responsibility for the operation of mines and processing facilities in Australia, New Caledonia, Canada and Norway.
Wayne has over 20 years of operational management experience of complex hydrometallurgical plants, specialising in transformation of operational and business performance.
Prior to his current role Wayne was Senior Vice President, Operations for Koniambo Nickel in New Caledonia for a period of 2 years and before that he was General Manager, Glencore Nickel WA for a period of 11 years based at the Murrin Murrin operations.
Wayne’s previous experience also includes Technical Consultant and Commissioning Manager for the Rio Tuba Nickel HPAL project located in the southern Philippines and as Engineering and Maintenance Manager at the Bulong Nickel Operation in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
Wayne has a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from Curtin University, Western Australia.
