Understanding Opportunities for Australian METS in Africa

Join Austmine’s WA Digital Mining Export Hub and our event partner AAMEG (Australia Africa Minerals and Energy Group) for our Understanding Opportunities for Australian METS companies in Africa event to be held in Perth on Thursday 30 September 2021.

 

Austmine’s WA METS Digital Mining Export Hub is delighted to be partnering with AAMEG to co-host this interactive hybrid event where Australian METS companies operating in Africa, together with international experts, will discuss opportunities for METS and what it takes to operate successfully in Africa. Presentations will be followed by an interactive panel session and networking.

Speakers

William Witham

CEO, Australia Africa Minerals and Energy Group (AAMEG)

William has held senior executive roles across the Australian and African resources sector for over two decades and has worked directly in Namibia, Botswana, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Egypt, Niger and South Africa. He has further experience in member-based organisation leadership, including with the Chamber of Minerals & Energy WA (Government Relations and Policy), National Party WA (Corporate Director) and South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. (Chair).

William brings an exceptional pedigree to the role, spanning corporate leadership in resource development in Africa, senior roles in resource sector representative bodies and direct experience in Government lobbying and negotiating at the State and Federal levels. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Western Australia with honours in Geology.

Scott Morriss

Trade Commissioner, Austrade South Africa 

Scott Morriss is Trade Commissioner for Africa, working for the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade). Austrade is the Australian Government’s trade and investment development agency and is responsible for advancing Australia's international trade, investment and education interests in Africa.

 

Scott oversees Austrade’s trade and investment promotion and facilitation work across Africa – assisting Australian businesses access the world fastest growing and most dynamic market place! He leads a team of eight highly qualified and experienced Business Development Managers (BDMs) based in South Africa, Kenya, Ghana and Morocco. Scott and the Austrade Team in Africa have a particular focus on resources, METS and energy related opportunities as well as Education, Food and Agribusiness and Fintech.

 

Scott arrived in Africa in May 2021, having spent the last four years in Tokyo Japan as a Trade Commissioner. He and his Japan team were responsible for Advanced Technology, Services, Education, Defence Industry and Advanced Manufacturing sectors. Key initiatives Scott and his Team in Japan were proud of progressing during his time in Tokyo include developing a highly successful new approach to attraction of R&D investment dollars into Australia; joining Australia’s leading cyber companies and universities to commercial, government and academic networks in Japan - delivering export sales and an increased cyber profile for Australia; and positioning a number of Australian companies for future success in key Japanese and Australian defence programs.  

 

Scott joined Austrade in 2017 after a 27 year career in the Australian Navy during which he served overseas in operational roles in the Middle East and represented Australia to Japan as Assistant Defence Attaché from 2012 to 2015.  Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Communications from the University of Canberra and is married to Anna. He enjoys reading on history, wine appreciation, travel and golf.

 

 

Peter Dawson

 

Director - Strategy and Corporate, Lycopodium 

 

Peter is a metallurgist by background and after graduation spent 15 years in operations, including with Lycopodium, before moving into corporate roles.  He has been an executive director of several public companies, was a partner in Corporate Finance at KPMG and CEO of oil & gas group, RISC Advisory.  Peter re-joined Lycopodium in 2017 in the role of Strategy and Corporate Development.

 

 

Dave Harper

 

CEO Geodrill, Ghana 

 

Dave Harper is the President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Geodrill. With over 35 years of experience in the drilling industry, 28 of those years in management and 25 of those in West Africa he is passionate about the future of drilling on the continent. Mr Harper had the vision to establish world class drill making & training facilities in Ghana  he expanded the fleet of drill rigs and developed new markets in West Africa and East Africa.
